Queen City – Charlotte Alumni Association History
The Queen City Chapter of the North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Association was organized in 1952. Otis Williams and Theodore Wells met with six Aggies to organize the chapter. Chapter members were Mathew Wingate, Lois Turnhill Hattie Williams, Edward Tarpley, George Jackson, and Howard Barnhill.
The group held its first official meeting in 1953. At this meeting, the original eight members were present as well as one new member, Matthew Shute. Two officers were elected – Theodore Wells – president and Otis Williams – vice president/secretary. The chapter was chartered as the Queen City Alumni Chapter on May 29, 1954, by Ellis Corbett, executive and public relations director of the University. The chapter was able to contribute $100 to the annual giving fund in its first year.
In 1955, Howard Barnhill was elected president of the chapter and served for four consecutive terms. The Queen City Alumni Chapter sponsored a scholarship ball in the early years in order to contribute a substantial amount to the annual giving fund. It has recruited outstanding students for enrollment at the university and supported all of the national alumni programs as well as the overall programs of the university.
In 1982, Matthew Shute was enshrined in the alumni sports hall of fame.
The chapter’s past presidents were Rembert Gaddy, Matthew Wingate, Joseph Champion, Thomas Mack, Rosa Scarborough, Franklin McCain, Walter Hunter, Marvin Rorie, Vivian Roscoe, and Howard Barnhill.
